Club
History
The
club was established in the mid-nineties at the Logan City Skating Rink, in
Slacks Creek, under a very informal arrangement until the end of 1999 when, the
executive members of the club decided that, for the club to grow we would need
to be incorporated. So
LOGAN CITY SPEED SKATING CLUB INC received its club association on
1st March 2000.
When we were first incorporated our membership consisted of 9 skaters, 3
coaches, 1 official and 7 non-skating members. By the end of 2001 our membership
had risen to 15 skaters, 3 coaches, 1 official and 10 non-skating
members.
In
January 2003, we were notified that the Logan City skating rink would be closing
down, so we relocated to Digiskate Skating Rink at Browns Plains. Today our
membership is still growing with 37 skaters, 23 non-skating members, of which
there are 8 coaches, 2 in training as coach, 12 officials and 1 club masseuse.
The
Sport
LCSSCI
works to actively promote and aid the growth and awareness of Speed Skating as a
sport in our locale, Queensland State, Australia Nationally and
Internationally. We
participate in competitions at local level, State, National, International -
Oceanics and World and have skaters who train and compete at all these
levels.
Our
sport has evolved from the days of quads (a wheel in each corner) to Inline
skates with 4-5 wheels set on a frame much like Ice skates. Although our senior skaters have
found adapting a challenge, most youngsters now possess some form of Inline
skates and can enjoy skating at many levels - Hockey, Artistic skating,
aggressive forms at the skate bowl and recreational skating. None of these can compete with the
excitement, family involvement or accessibility for all ages, gender or
competency that Speed Skating can offer.
Competitions involve racing on an indoor
track; outside on a road surface; banked track; and at Marathon venues. Our indoor training venue is
at Digiskate Roller Skating Rink, 40/44 Johnson Road, Browns Plains 4118, we
also train at several outdoor venues for various training regimes. These include the Cycle track at
Murarrie, the Water tower at Springwood, Nerang Cycle Track and a number of
Industrial/Commercial carparks with a suitable surface (depending on the
requirements of upcoming competitions)

Having
identified last year that we needed additional expertise within the club, have
successfully applied for a grant to expand our number of qualified coaches,
first aiders and to give training to our competitors in the areas of nutrition
and prevention of sporting injuries
·
We work closely with the Sport and Recreation Officer attached to the Logan City
Council and have secured provision for a training/competition track in Stage 2
of the plans for a new sporting complex.
The
club has been fortunate to have received on going support from our local
community and we are extremely grateful to RBC, Digiskate Skating Rink; Logan City
Council. Also we have
received funding from Logan Diggers; Qld Government - Sport & Recreation;
Grand Plaza Shopping Centre, Browns Plains; and local Councillors; these
organisations have all helped the club and individuals within the club to
develop and grow.
Logan City Speed Skating
Club has focused our short-term goals on increasing membership and developing
the club structure and skills.
On a long term level we are working in conjunction with the Logan City Council, towards constructing and developing training and competition venues, specifically, a suitable road track.
