A mature and intelligent assessment of the universe must conclude
that from a practical standpoint, atheism is the most sensible belief
system. The proliferation of war and terrorism in the name of god has
made it more urgent than ever for the malignant effects of religion to
be countered by clear and intelligent thinking about the
existence of deities. It is no good for people in so-called Christian
countries to condemn suicide bombers for believing they will
enjoy
the sexual attentions of virgins in heaven, when Christianity
has its own equally ludicrous promise of eternal pleasure in the
afterlife. Atheists should stand up and state clearly that they
do not believe in god. In the interests of education, truth and sanity,
this idea should be encouraged in all people.
