Compound Slide Modification Page 1

Machining the new compound screw, I used steel from a car shock absorber, it's a nice machining medium tensile steel.

New screw is about 1 and 1/2 inches longer than original.

I marked out the end of the lower piece of the compound to be in alignment with the hole in the other end. This has to be drilled because the longer screw will protrude by about 1/2" when compound is wound to it's extreme towards headstock.

Now I needed to cut a 3mm wide woodruff keyway, I didn't have a cutter so decided to make my own, check the Woodruff Cutter story. Anyway here is the keyway being cut.

Another view of setup and the cut keyway.

And again.

I turned a piece of my cast Aluminium into a rectangular shape, marked out and drilled etc.

More marking out and doing the hacksaw trick, I wish I had a mill.

After hacksawing, I wish I had a mill!!!!
