Machining the mounting plate for the new 4 jaw chuck. The original one (as seen here) isn't much of a chuck, you have to undo a nut at the back of each jaw when you want to reverse the jaws and they have limited travel and it's just not a REAL chuck.

I am pulling the spindle out so I can use it as a gauge when I machine the thread in the mounting plate at work. The nose thread is M39x4

Have re-assembled the spindle and finished machining the mounting face and spigot for the chuck. Have measured out and machined the PCD (pitch circle diameter) groove for the mounting bolt holes.

Now there's a real 4 jaw chuck! It's 125mm dia.The 100mm dia 3 jaw is there for comparison.

The chuck is retained on the plate by 4 socket head cap screws. They are M8x1.25, there is a M6x1 grub screw for locking to the spindle. Earlier pictures of my lathe are on the "Early Days of My Lathe(9"x20")" page.
