Outlawing decent behaviour
I came across this web site/blog today,
http://vitw.org/
with a fascinating article about the US treasury fining this organisation (Voices in the Wilderness), $20,000 for "exporting medicines to Iraq". Apparently this heinous crime was committed during the sanctions period prior to the invasion. ViTW attorney says
"This case is about justice, this hearing is an attempt to further criminalize dissent, and we will continue our civil resistance and actions regardless of the outcome of this case." Other information on the site is eye-opening as well. I don't know who is behind the site, other than their own blurb:
"We are people of conscience—volunteers, teachers, veterans, social workers, artists, health care professionals, trades people and people of faith—who, in the tradition of Mohandas Gandhi, practice and advocate nonviolence in the pursuit of social justice. As nonviolent war resisters, we oppose the development, storage, sale, and use of weapons of mass destruction by anyone or any country, be they nuclear, chemical, biological, or economic weapons. Many of us refuse to pay taxes for war. "
I would imagine certain anti-liberals will simply accuse them of being either misguided (bleeding hearts, no doubt) or a front for terrorist activity, yet here we have the Treasury Department, of all groups, doing their bit put down not only dissent, but organised acts of decency, as opposed to the recent acts of indecency.
