The Downing Street Memo - Proof of dishonesty by Bush and Blair (and deputy sherrif John Howard)
This site publishes the leaked memo of a meeting in July 2002 where the British reported on discussions with the Bush administration about Iraq: http://www.downingstreetmemo.com/index.html. It is the clearest proof I've seen of how utterly dishonest our political leaders have been with us.
The site quotes this gem from Conaleeza Rice on her recent "surprise" visit to Baghdad on the 15th May 2005 "I want you to keep focused on what you are doing here," [...] "This war came to us, not the other way around." . How amazing! Even after all these revelations, she is completely comfortable with straight out bullshit.
The site also quotes the Age newspaper, 2nd May 2005: "The memo also shows that Attorney-General Lord Goldsmith warned Mr Blair eight months before the invasion that finding a legal justification for war would be difficult and 'the desire for regime change was not a legal base for military action' ".
I would like to believe that our Prime Minister, John Howard and his cabinet members were honest and geniune people with Australia's interests at heart, but I cannot. They have shown themselves to be unethical, dishonest and totally untrustworthy. War is a terrible thing. We should not get involved in wars without proper justification. The Iraq invasion had nothing to do with bringing freedom to Iraq, and everything to do a naked power grab - for control of the region and especially its oil resources - when the opportunity presented itself.
