FAMILY HISTORY

Laurence and Irene met while they were both working at a local cinema in Selly Oak, Birmingham. Irene was an usherette and Laurence a projectionist. They married in 1946 and immigrated with their six children in the English winter of 1959 to Melbourne, Australia as "Ten Pound migrants" aboard the P & O Liner "Orion".

Laurence's father, George Samuel HARVEY was born in Willaston (Gawler) South Australia but left to live in Birmingham, England with his English wife, Alice Louise MASKELL in the early 1920s, never to return. It was not until the mid 1970s that Laurence, now living in Melbourne, was able to make contact with his father's remaining family in Willaston. Decendants of George HARVEY's sister, Hilda MOLD, still live in the house on Brown Street, Willaston built by George and Hilda's parents, William & Rosa HARVEY, in the 1890s.

Just a few months after celebrating his 50th Wedding Anniversary, following a long illness, Laurence passed away, 28 June 1997. He was buried at the Bunarung Cemetary, Melbourne, 4th July 1997, the day the world stopped to watch NASA's Pathfinder and the Mars Rover, venture forth to explore the rocky, Martian landscape. Because of his love of science and space, this would have been an event very dear to Laurence's heart.
