Charles HUMPHRIES was a blacksmith by trade working and living in Aston, Birmingham
during the early to mid 19th century. Birmingham at that time was already a major centre
for the brass trade and so naturally many of Charles' sons became brass workers and brass
founders. Brass was one of the four main industries of Birmingham during the 19th century,
along with guns, buttons and jewellery. It is estimated that by 1870 10,000 workers were
involved in the brass trade alone. Charles himself would probably have been apprenticed to a blacksmith at about
fourteen years of age and may not have been free to pursue his trade independently
until his early twenties.
Charles HUMPHRIES and his family appear in the 1851 census living in Birmingham, Warwick but as he does not give his place of birth, it has been
difficult to be certain of his origins. It is quite possible that Charles was born
somewhere in the Berkswell area much like his wife Charlotte. We know the couple were
married in St. Michael's cathederal,
Coventry in 1833 and that it was traditional at that time for marriages to take place in
the
parish of the bride. As it is known for certain that Charlotte HARRISON was born in nearby
Berkswell the place of marriage does not necessarily help with Charles' origins.
At least the first three of the couples many children were born in Berkswell but,
again, it was not unusual for a woman to return to her family home for her first
confinements.
As was the custom at the time, Charles HUMPHRIES and Charlotte HARRISON would probably
have attended the annual Attest Fair, where local farmers and tradesmen would come once a
year to hire their
servants. As young unmarrieds Charles & Charlotte may well have travelled great
distances from their family homes to find work or an apprenticeship during the years
before their marriage. Many young people from rural areas made their living as live-in
domestics, apprentices, servants and labourers in nearby towns such as Coventry,
Warwick, Kenilworth and cities such Birmingham . Charlotte HARRISON'S brother, Benjamin HARRISON, has been discovered living with his wife and family in and around Peterborough, Northampton many miles to the east of his birth place in Berkswell, Warwickshire.
Although we hope one day to find a definate link between Charles HUMPHRIES and the
Berkswell HUMPHRIES, is is quite possible that he originated somewhere else entirely and that
the couple met while one or both were working away from home.
