AN AWESOME GUY

My son Brendan was an awesome guy,
I don't know why he had to die.
He was so cute as a little boy,
his smile would fill a room with joy

We never fought or disagreed
he was always there for my every need
I never wanted to be a pest,
but I needed his skills, cause he was the best.

He was always right and he always knew,
so I'd admit defeat and never argue
But I knew I was the lucky one,
for Brendan was chosen to be my son

He was someone special no one can deny
nor would we question or even ask why
He idolized children, their knowledge grew
he had the answers and they always knew

A party would be great, and he could come
We would even shout the Bacardi or Rum
it's the happy thoughts that get us through,
The fun the laughter to just name a few.

I had a dream, he was just standing there
it made me think "Life isn't fair"
With his half turned smile that made me see
he will always remain a part of me

Our hearts are broken, as you must know,
we really can't bear to let him go.
As long as the ocean meets the sky
the memories of him will never die

A LONG WAY TO A MAN

"I look to the day of being a Young Man
to help my dear mother the best way I can,

I will tend to her needs, she will lean on my arm
for she is so gentle I want her no harm,"

then he thought out aloud "but that will be long,
I am not very tall nor very strong!

hmm, on second thoughts I think I will wait
it's a long way to a man from a boy of just eight,

I should just concentrate on being her pride and joy
I will clean up my room while I am still her big boy"

AT PLAY

Basking in the sunshine
on the grass where I lay
listening to all the children
happily as they play.

While engrossed in my book
had been there quite a while
I glanced up to see
a bare footed child.

In her hand was held a candy
her face was not quite clean
the ball at her feet
showed where she had been.

She smiled as she asked
"You want to come and play
they're all my friends here
we come here everyday"

I declined the invitation
saying "I would rather look"
all I really wanted
was to get back to my book

Then I began to apologize
in hoping I didn't offend
but she waved me goodbye
as she raced off to her friend

ANGEL OF GOD

God sends down His angel
to plant the seeds that sow,
then our tears, joy and laughter
will help His garden grow

From this garden a beautiful flower
to us was loaned, not given,
to grow here on earth
then to bloom back up in Heaven

We may all have that wonder
but no one will question why,
he left the ones he loved
why he was chosen to die

So in peace he went to Jesus
he followed his guiding star,
to be greeted at the pearly gates
meeting up with his nan and pa

I know we will never forget
our beautiful times together,
they meant the world to us
we thought he was here forever

ANGEL

An angel is there
to watch over you,
to hear what you say
to see what you do,

An angel will guide you
like a shining star,
an angel will care
and watch you go far,

An angel wont criticize
or tell you what's right,
an angel won't change
a day into night,

We all have an angel
who have so much to give,
they shower us with love
they teach us how to live

© abritelite

AM I STRONG?

You took me by the hand
I had no where else to go,
given all my troubles
given all my woes

Had I given up
what I struggled most to gain,
was I bearing my own problems
or was it just the pain

I always thought I was strong
with no one to stand in my way,
but maybe it's different now
for that was yesterday

I have now decided
I won't be who I'm not,
I will take what is offered
even if it's not a lot

I agree I was proud
with a will that I thought was strong,
but when it's boiled down
I am weak, but thou art strong

AN ASPIRING ANGEL

We can all learn to read
but do we understand,
we know how to give
but mostly with the hand

But not everyone can love
some don't know where to start,
for those of us that speak
is it always from the heart?

It's the knowing of how to listen
to show those we love we care,
then when they need someone
for then we will be there

A TIME FOR A FRIEND

I need to feel secure
and a place to be fed,
I need some caring
and a warm cosy bed

I may need some company
and a just once in a while,
an ear to listen to me
with a warm confident smile

If I need some help
with my homework at all,
that you won't mind
if I give you a call

If I have any problems
or troubles to share,
that you will in someway
show that you care

For this is how
I will live each day,
with the aim to treat others
in the very same way

A MOMENT OF YOUR TIME

Do you mind if I take a moment of your time,
To share this story, but I can only tell it in rhyme.

When I was a small child
of very tender years,
I remember a lot of heartache
and the many shedded tears.

I knew my mum was troubled
for usually everything we shared,
I felt she had shut me out
I thought she no longer cared.

I went through a period
that I started to rebel,
our life that once was bliss
was turning into hell.

Then I overheard her talking
to my grandma and aunt one night,
I didn't understand all of it
but I know I was put in fright.

I was so confused by her words
she told them she was going to die,
I ran into the room demanding
why she was telling such a lie.

I remember I was screaming
I couldn't see through my tears,
and this was the beginning
of all my dreaded fears.

Later on that night
we were able to sit down and talk,
she told me she was getting weak
and trouble when she tried to walk.

The pain was overwhelming
but she refused their medication,
she knew her mind would stray
if she was under any sedation.

She was also very worried
on what the outcome of this would be,
where I would end up staying
after she was taken away from me.

She had weighed up this situation
what if I was taken away,
or which of the relatives
would want me to stay.

I couldn't comprehend
the thoughts that were in her mind,
I just wanted her to get well
surely there was a doctor we could find.

As the days turned into weeks
realization started to set in,
my mum was getting so very weak
and she was looking so very thin.

It was then I knew if there were angels
God was making special room for another,
so I then asked him in my prayers
"God, help me, don't allow my mum to suffer"

I can look back now
to the times that we both had,
to those special moments
the good and the bad.

I now know what she meant by
"I will not be far away"
for I see my mum in my children,
almost every day

Authors note: this is not a personal story of mine,
but I feel it belongs to someone out there

AFTER DARK

I am watching the sunset
as it moves out of site,
going from the day
into the night

As the clouds drift by
they pass the moon,
waiting for the stars
to appear very soon

I see in the darkness
a possible storm up ahead,
then a flash of lightning
a shower of rain instead

I've always had a wish
to be the brightest star,
not to be unreachable
but oh so very far

Or maybe I could fall
like a fine shower of rain,
that falls light and clear
with no sign of pain

Then each day I could rise
like a warm ray of sun,
sending rays of hope
down to everyone

First I will rid the cloud
that is hovering over me,
for once it passes by
I know I will be free

A BRAVE LITTLE BOY

When she first awakes each morning
with the usual unbearable pain,
she would always hide her tears
you would never hear her complain.

Her only main concern
was that of her only son,
he was just 10 years old
as family, they were one.

He too was also suffering
but in a very different way,
he never wanted mum to know
so he smiled as he'd say.

"Mum I love you
I will never leave your side"
gently wiping away her tears
the ones she tried to hide.

They had many talks together
to prepare for when she may leave,
but this was something he found
very hard to believe.

He had many hopeful dreams
he often prayed they would come true,
of places they would go
of the things that they would do.

This morning when he awoke
his mum was no longer in pain,
his prayers and hopes for tomorrow
he found were to be in vain.

For his mum did not awake
she died peacefully in her sleep,
knowing she's now with Gods Angels
in prayer, we watch him silently weep.

A CHILD'S PAIN

I tell you to weep little one
there is no wrong in tears,
be proud of your emotions
they help rid all your fears

You think you did wrong
this is far from very true,
there were many different reasons
but none were because of you

You saw your mothers tears
behind her hidden smile,
when had your dad last spoken
to you it was quite a while

The noise crept through the walls
no matter how hard you tried,
your hands muffled your ears
your pillow saturated as you cried

It's you that they are hurting,
it's your tears that fall like rain,
everyday that they are together
it's you they are causing pain

Each morning from your sleep
the hurt is still always there,
you don't want to understand
you just know it isn't fair

Maybe you will never know the answers
or even try to get them explained,
one thing from all this you'll remember
will be the knowledge that you've gained

A DAY GO BY

I stood by I waited
for what I was not sure
I felt a part of me missing
not sure where it was before

Just to sit by and wait
as I watch a day go by
I pick up a pen to write
I feel feeble as I try

strange the way you feel
when you know that all is lost
like in a blazing fire
when memorabilia is the cost

some things you can replace
like the things that you buy
but no one can replace memories
no matter how hard they try

A FRIEND

A friend is there
day and night
through the darkness
through the light

A friend is someone
that you choose
someone you know
you will never lose

A friend will always
be by your side
someone you trust,
who has never lied

A friend is someone
you know will stay
If the going gets tough
they won't walk away

A friend is someone
who will speak their mind
Honest, sincere,
caring and kind

So as you're wondering
who this friend may be
Just look in the mirror
and say "That's me"

A HUSBAND AND HIS WIFE

I try to listen to you dad
and do everything you say,
But all she ever wants to do
is stay in bed all day

I even met her parents
and they hardly said a word,
I think they really liked me
from what I overheard

I acted like a gentleman
I even opened every door,
but I really had the feeling
that I needed something more

So I think when I find someone
I want to take to be my wife,
It should come very natural
I will love her more than life....

"Now listen to me son
and heed what I am to say!
you watch me and mother
almost everyday"

"Your mother is a fine woman
of that I have no qualm,
she is always here for us
and her cooking does no harm."

"But I want for you my son
to have a perfect life,
so what I am about to tell you
is how to get a wife!"

"She has to know a dustpan
and learn to scrub to clean,
and what a broom is used for,
you do know what I mean?"

"She doesn't need a dishwasher
for her hands will do the chores,
she will do all the ironing
and mop up all the floors"

"If she wants to make you happy
she will do all this for you,
and if she appreciates her hubby
she will do what is her due"

"After your hard day at work
have a round of golf with your mate,
but never go past midnight
she may consider it rather late"

"She will stay and care for you
tend to your children she may bare,
everyday you will go to work
will be your participating share"

"If you have an important meeting
and your secretary is new,
you can show her all the ropes
as I have just shown yours to you."

A LIFE ON EARTH HAS ENDED

When a life on earth has ended
many loved ones still remain,
The memories of a smile
will somehow ease their pain.

Looking back yonder to the past
as we remember those younger years,
helped by the days of memories
when fighting back the tears.

They were more than special
in many peoples eyes,
How your love did touch
so many of our lives

Within our hearts there will always be
a special place for you,
Inside we will carry on the memories
of things that you use to do.

We know that you're looking down from Heaven
to tell us that you are okay,
Never will your presence
leave us or go away.

Be with us O dear Lord,
help heal those broken wings,
At night when we hear her voice,
for with the angels she sings

A LITTLE CHILD

For I am but a little child
my parents taken forever,
in this jungle feared land
where heat is our only weather

For I am but a little child
all alone I am learning to defend,
I must redeem all my strength
so the land can become my friend

For I am but a little child
with many fears that I still dread,
I hear many strange sounds around me
they caused many tears that I have shed

For I am but a little child
with no knowledge of how to survive,
learning that rabbits are at their best
when they are not alive

For I am but a little child
with no knowledge of how to hate,
but I must learn a different strength
I am just hoping it is not too late

For I am but a little child
but inside I have started to grow,
I am learning all the things
they said I was too young to know

For I am but a little child
I know God will understand
if he sees a bloodied carcass
spread across my bony hand

why?

For I am but a little child.....
for my parents I must survive

A NATURAL

As I lay awake at night
my thoughts are of you,
the words I hear you say
a lot of what you do

The many ideas we've share
the things we've done together,
as natural as the rain
as winter is to weather

There are never words
that together we don't understand,
we are as natural together
as music is to a band

Like some thoughts we've shared
in silence or out aloud,
shows our love for each other
is like the sky is to a cloud

A NEW BEGINNING

As you wake up in the morn
you climb out from your bed
a new day is warmly welcomed
and what may lie ahead.

Watching clouds drift quietly by
not knowing of the weather
sorting cottons from your woollens
you decide to adorn your leather

Your skin feels rough and ready
your hands all cracked and dry
showing many toiled years
you'll never question why

You worked hard to make a living
to watch your family grow
you're proud of their achievement
so you often let them know

Your children are your lifetime
bringing pleasure through the years
of course there were the heartaches
you were there to wipe their tears

A new generation forth coming
no time for that long earned rest
you'll reward them with your stories
from the years you call the best

© abritelite

A NEW DAY

I welcome each new day
with a breath of fresh air
the sky of blue above
not a cloud anywhere

The flowers by the brook
is a site to be seen
the water flows by
so calm and serene

The silence is deafening
no sound can be heard
not the trees in the distance
nor the flight of a bird

I spread my blanket out
to read by the trunk of a tree
I don't feel alone
but I do feel free

A PETAL

He was a beautiful bud
with petals so small
Drawing our attention
he was loved by all

His heart reached out
you could feel his touch
He was so little
yet he gave so much

I was drawn to him
in such a short while
By his laughter his love
his beautiful smile

my heart ached
as the angels in call
Took this beautiful bud
with petals so small

We now have beautiful memories
of a brave little boy
Whose laughter and love
gave so much joy

© abritelite

A PROMISE

God made me a promise
He kept to the end,
to send a beautiful child
but for only a lend

He couldn't say for how long
whether a month or many years,
this child would be mine to love
through laughter as well as tears

So when the angel came to visit
with a beautiful baby boy,
as our eyes met I knew
he would fulfil my every joy

I remember his beautiful smile
his golden curly hair,
the memories that last forever
for they go with me everywhere

In his 28 years of living
he taught me many things,
to take one day at a time
to accept what life brings

Remembering these beautiful memories
as I wipe a tear from my eye,
the day had finally come
I will never question why

As the angel reappeared
she took him by the hand,
I knew why God had sent her
for it's He that understands

A RAY OF SUNSHINE

Waiting for that ray of sunshine
to come into my life,
to guide me to the man
who will want me for his wife

I know who this man is
he joins me every night,
after I close up my blinds
and turn out the light

He means everything to me
it's a feeling deep inside,
the warmth of his heart
with his confidence and pride

so when that ray of sunshine
is ready to shine and gleam,
I will reach out and touch him
this man that's in my dream

© abritelite

A REASON

You don't need a reason
to remember a day,
you don't need a reason
for words you want to say

They will always be with you
always on your mind,
words will come easy
they're not hard to find

I remember feeling lost
down a path with no end,
Your words were what guided me
you never did pretend

Nor did you pull punches
what you said was true,
why would I need a reason
when I had a friend like you

© abritelite

A STRANGER

As he walked my way
I felt I should stand
then as he approached
he offered his hand

I felt a little nervous
I looked around to see
here was a stranger
asking to dance with me

I noticed him enter
I watched him for a while
what drew my attention
was his laughter and smile

As I took his hand
we headed for the floor
I melted in his arms
as though I'd been here before

We asked each others names
and before the other spoke
I realized it was a dream
then I suddenly awoke

© abritelite

A VISITOR

As I spread my blanket out
beneath the big Oak tree,
the shade from the sun
is there protecting me

In the quiet with a book
I am reading every word,
but my thoughts were moved
by the voices that I heard

I didn't mean to listen
I could not help but hear,
I was not in their sight
they could not know I was near

I wanted to move
to get up and walk away,
but the most part of me
compelled me to stay

I now knew the truth
of what people said,
love had ruled my heart
but has it ruled my head

I watched them walk away
with their arms around each other,
one was my best friend
the other was my lover

A WORD

The atmosphere was tense
the silence took a hold,
the bitterness was unforgotten
as the event was retold

There is always more
to what you have heard,
how some seem to leave out
the most important word

You would rather hear two sides
cause one is never enough,
you're expected to make a decision
and you know that can be tough

But don't forget to others
this trauma is no big deal,
there is more in life than this
how good you can make one feel

A YOUNG MAN AND HIS TRUMPET

A proud young man and his trumpet
joined the Army Corps
living just ten miles out of town,
He crossed the fields as he waved his goodbyes
then north his travels bound.

From behind nowhere came a wild dog
teeth growling white charging to attack,
no one around for many a mile
too weak and too far to turn back

So he lay in blood that was not thru war
and in pain he still knew what to do
he unpacked his bag and trumpet
and then in a deep breath he loudly blew

The noise was heard from miles afar
through the winds a sound was sent,
a young man who lived for his music
was saved by his own instrument

ACROSS THE WAY

I stand upon the bridge
my thoughts of you and me,
I gaze out yonder
I tell you what I see

There are two people
staring at the stars above,
their hands reach out
they are very much in love

Then I see their eyes meet
their faces show loving smiles,
for this love for each other
travels many many miles

They reach out to touch
and hold each other near,
the comfort of their love
is very very dear

I know these two people
I know their love is true,
for they are very special
one is me, the other you...

ALL ALONE

As I wandered down the path
I glanced on up ahead
I noticed him all alone
then he approached me as he said

"Can you spare a dime,
even a nickel will do
I am need of some vinyl
I am in need of a shoe"

He was all ragged
his clothes tattered and old
his hair needed combing
he was shivering with cold

His eyes caught my attention
they were a bright sea of blue
there was a twinge of sadness
with kindness melting through

As his lips moved
on a face drawn and thin
I noticed the deep lines
that once held a grin

You could see by his hands
that they toiled many years
his life had been a struggle
of laughter and tears

How do these things happen
you may think in dismay
to get this far in life
then to end up this way

© abritelite

ALONE

Parked in the car all alone
with not a soul around
The darkness overcomes me
the leaves the only sound

Plenty of time for thoughts
of the ones that I treasure
Gives me courage to go on
to live life its full measure

My feelings and emotions
are truly sincere
For those who I care for
and those who I hold dear

So when I go down to sleep
and turn out the light
I will remember these thoughts
that I held dear tonight

© abritelite

ALONE AT NIGHT

As I lie here awake
all alone at night
my arms wrapped around me
with friends in my sight

My thoughts are taken back
to the day I left behind
of the people I love
so caring and so kind

These people are my friends
we speak every other day
our opinions may differ
but listen to what they say

The important thing to know
there's always someone there
for that chat or a laugh
or a secret we wish to share

© abritelite

ALONE WITH YOU

I saw you were alone
I thought I'd take a chance,
so I walked on over
I asked you for a dance

I held out my hand
led you to the floor,
as the music ended
I asked you for one more

When we started chatting
we knew each others name,
we found that our interests
were similar if not the same

As the night went on
I was given time to think,
before you slipped away
I invited you for a drink

When you accepted
with a smile that melted through,
I knew that then
I was more than liking you

By the time night had ended
we made arrangements for a date,
I was glad I took that chance
I was glad I didn't wait

ALWAYS THERE

I didn't have an answer
but I knew they would
help me decide
in any way they could

I had no way to get there
no transport at all
I knew they would take me
I only need to call

I couldn't repair it
it was too big a task
I knew they would
I would only need to ask

If ever I felt lonely
or in need of a chat
they had this way of knowing
they were like that

They not only gave me life
they taught me how to live
sharing with me their knowledge
was how I learnt to give

They praise me through the good
standing by me through the bad
these people are more than friends
they are my mum and dad

AN EMOTION

It is not measured
nor is it made,
it is not valued
nor is it weighed

It can be afar
or it can be near,
it is an emotion
in no way a fear

It comes at any time
sometimes in fate,
it's called Love
you can't make it wait

AUSTRALIA

The summer is now with us
the burning winds blow
The oceans run deep
The rivers run low

A land of scorching sand
A dry lake with no rain
A path cracked and dry
journeys toward the plain

This is the land of giving
A land that won't allow failure
This is our land
The land called Australia

AWAKE

I lie awake
my eyes open wide,
I stare at you
by my side

I take your hand
we talk a while,
I look in your eyes
I see your smile

It may have been a dream
but it wasn't untrue,
for I carry in my heart
a special part of you

© abritelite

AWARD

As I sit here waiting
feeling very proud
I hear your name
called out aloud

I turn around
I see your smile
a satisfaction look
shows it's been worthwhile

It's not just a wish
that's finally come true
it's all the long hours
that you put through

The crowd in agreement
they all applaud
watch as you accept
your well deserved award

They know how hard
you worked for this
you gave your all
with never a miss

Sleepless nights
and endless days
has shown how much
hard work pays

AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK

In the Outback of Australia
where the sweltering north winds blow
there is a bare and dry existence
as the rivers lie bare and low

The sight of white chalky bones
strewn across the plain
showing there was once cattle
who surely died in vain

The burning track eats through my soles
with no relief from a baron tree
nor shelter from the scorching sun
as far as the eye can see

My vision of the distance
and where I am heading for
with my love of adventure
is worth this trek and more

This is the land of giving
A land that won't allow failure
This is our land
The land called Australia

AS YOU SLEEP

I watch in silence
as you lay in sleep,
The fire light flickers
you do not peep

Only silent breathing
can be heard,
As I approach you
there is not a word

Bending over gently
I kiss you on the cheek,
My heart is racing
my knees feel weak

I see a gentle smile
on the corner of your lips,
As I stroke your hair
with my finger tips

As you lay on your pillow
the stars shine in the night,
I know you're in a dream
but that's alright

I just want you to know
that I am watching over you,
It's something I do often
when I am passing through

A PARTY

Paper Towels and plastic spoons
coloured streamers and red balloons,

chocolate cake and fairy bread
jelly beans and froggo fred,

pass the parcel and a piñatas
lots of children full of laughter,

it's not the presents that I recall
of the best party of them all,

it was the company and all my friends
so 'thank you' is what this message sends

A PROMISED LAND

I first place my feet on foreign shores
with nothing but my mother tongue,
many years lay ahead of me
for I am small and only young

My father is laden with many boxes
and each hand holds our cases,
mother leans her tired body forward
to do up my untied laces

I see into her bright blue eyes
on a face filled with lines of worry,
from a distance we hear another voice
it tells us all to hurry

The queues are crowded and very long
where people push a shove,
many are in the same predicament
only concerns for those they love

My feelings of many mixed emotions
that are overwhelming me,
I gave my parents all my trust
they promised this land we would be free

I know I can stand straight and tall
where I will learn the knowledge to achieve,
I will grow to be a proud Australian
and with courage I shall believe

A HUG

AN ANGEL CAME TO VISIT

I felt all alone, I was crying
tears streaming down my face,
then I saw my guardian angel
so beautiful and full of grace

Gently she wiped away my tears
and inside I felt a glow,
she gave me a door to open
there was now a place for me to go

Then I noticed the angel vanished
feeling lost and alone no more,
the light that beamed within me
would guide me through my door

AUSTRALIAN RULES

The coin is tossed
in the middle of the ground,
for a ball that's neither
square nor round

The crowd that watch
make a mighty roar,
the tension is mounting
like never before

There's a man in the middle
dressed in white,
he throws the ball
then ducks out of sight

As the men all fly
their bodies in the air,
they are going wild
they are everywhere

Thinking this is crazy
so the man does run,
he thought it was going
to be a lot of fun

The rain pelts down
making a mass of mud,
you hear their bodies land
with a mighty thud

No one knows who is who
or even cares,
it's the ball they're after
they claim it's theirs

They aim to the goal post
and if they miss,
the jump up and down
giving the other a kiss

I sit there wondering
is this a game,
or is it a football
without a name

When you realize
the when's and why's
You'll follow the best
THE MIGHTY PIES.

A BARREN TREE

My eyes search thru the windows
and the first thing that they see,
are flowing branches and falling leaves
of a now barren tree

This tree once hid our view
of houses that now surround,
when their branches were all full
and no leaves upon the ground

Once you would be able to listen
in the whispering of their leaves,
hear the birds as they were chirping
now nature has become their thieves

The once animals now unprotected
where have they gone to hide,
the birds can be seen
hovering the sky were they glide

Do we take our trees for granted
to shelter us from falling rain,
to protect us as shade
when the sun shines bright again

If you have a garden of flowers
you will notice they only attract bees,
think of what a dog would do
if they were to take away the trees

A MALE

My computer must be male
cause it's acting like no other,
it relies on the board
which of course is his mother

Doesn't read or write
and is a hopeless cook,
is like my mother said
"you can read em like a book."

I've yet to meet a man
that admits he ain't right,
never met a man who thinks
to win there must be a fight

Have you ever met a man
who knows what a diaper's for,
or is able to hang up clothes
that didn't land on the floor

I've yet to meet a man
who knows the birth date of his wife,
he gives that of his mothers
then wonders why it causes strife

I only know of one perfect guy
and he belongs to you,
He is your husband
but he is my father too

A FIELD OF DAISIES

As I lay in a field of yellow daisies
surrounded by leaves of barren trees,
flowing through each strand of my hair
is the sweet smell of a scented breeze

Sounds of birds chirping in the distance
make the fragrance more delicate and sweet,
the sun shines from a nearly cloudless sky
my hair shelters me from any burning heat

The one thing that is missing, is you
for no longer I have to hide,
what would fulfil my greatest desire
would be to have you here by my side

just the two of us together
through the darkness of a still night,
with the silvery moon above
being our only source of light

All our troubles would be put aside forever
only our deep passion would succeed,
for our hunger for the other
would be our only greed

In my thoughts I pick a daisy
and fondle it with loving care,
with each petal I pick with love
I again wish that you were there
