I was born in Brisbane, Australia, in 1961. I grew up in a small seaside community called Cribb Island, which was later to be resumed by government for the purpose of building an international airport for the city. Mine was a rather poor, working class upbringing, my mother being invalided through epilepsy from an early age and my father destined, himself, for a life of illness. This was offset, however, by the wonderful environment of my childhood; I was fortunate to have grown up in an area where I could explore, swim, fish and basically do all the things that kids are supposed to do. It was, in that way, a very natural upbringing.
I attended a Catholic primary school and was raised in a fairly standard Catholic way. However, by the time I was "confirmed" I had already turned away from my Catholic beliefs. Even at the age of 12 I could see that they were total nonsense.

I went to a state high school and did quite well scholastically, but grew increasingly disinterested in putting effort into things I didn't give a hoot about. This, coupled with the dramas of the protracted death by cancer of my father, a situation in which I was closely involved, resulted in my dropping out of high school before my final year. Although I knew I was different from other people, I had, at that time, no real place to "put" that difference, so I ended up with a conventional job and life, which I tolerated for some 8 years before becoming so disenchanted with it all that I tossed in the job, along with just about everything else in my life, and "ran away" to Bundaberg, Queensland, for a short while. I soon ran out of funds and returned to Brisbane, sold all my possessions and tried to give some focus to my intellectual yearnings. I read quite a lot but was uninspired by most of it. During this period - the early 90's - I met Kevin Solway after his hearing me doing a guest spot on a talk radio show, speaking about astronomy and astrology and the importance of rationality. He was to prove to be the inspirational spark that I needed. I am currently retired from most public activity and am pursuing long neglected literary endeavors.
